What causes depression? It's often said that depression results from a chemical imbalance, but that figure of speech doesn't capture how complex the disease is. Research suggests that depression doesn't spring from simply having too much or too little of certain brain chemicals. Rather, there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems. It's believed that several of these forces interact to bring on depression. To be sure, chemicals are involved in this process, but it is not a simple matter of one chemical being too low and another too high. Rather, many chemicals are involved, working both inside and outside nerve cells. There are millions, even billions, of chemical reactions that make up the dynamic system that is responsible for your mood, perceptions, and how you experience life. With this level of complexity, you can see how two p

WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?

WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS? In exploring alternative approaches to mental health, it is first important to understand what mental illness actually is. Most psychiatric survivors reject the term “mental illness” altogether, as it supports what is considered the “medical model” of mental health. The medical model is based on the idea that there is a physiological impairment creating a neurochemical imbalance in a person’s brain, resulting in a mental illness. Despite this popular perspective, it is based on flawed science. To deny the biological basis of mental illness is not to deny that people are experiencing emotional, psychological, and at times even physical distress. So what exactly is going on? Many factors play a role. According to the late psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz, “Our adversaries are not demons, witches, fate, or mental illness. We have no enemy whom we can fight, exorcise, or dispel by ‘cure.’ What we do have are problems in living.” Evidence also shows th

How is the Coronavirus transmitted?

Image
How is the  Coronavirus  transmitted?    It’s likely that the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) originated in an      animal species, and then spread to humans. Person to person spread of the novel corona virus is reported, but it is not yet understood how easily this happens. Other human coronavirus strains are spread from person to person through contaminated droplets from a person who is sick with the illness (through coughing or sneezing) or contaminated hands. Is there any treatment for Coronavirus Disease? There is no specific treatment. It is mainly supportive treatment that aims at reducing symptoms. Ways to prevent the disease Wash Your Hands For 20sec        Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Cover Nose & Mouth When Sneezing  Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues. Use Sanitizer  Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Avoid Crowded Places (Social Distancing)  As an individual, you can low

What is Machine Learning?

Image
What is Machine Learning? Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed.  Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs  that can access data and use it learn for themselves. The process of learning begins with observations or data, such as examples, direct experience, or instruction, in order to look for patterns in data and make better decisions in the future based on the examples that we provide.  The primary aim is to allow the computers learn automatically  without human intervention or assistance and adjust actions accordingly. Some machine learning methods Machine learning algorithms are often categorized as supervised or unsupervised. Supervised machine learning algorithms  can apply what has been learned in the past to new data using labeled examples to predict future events. Starting f

How Significant Is Blockchain in Internet of Things?

How Significant Is Blockchain in Internet of Things? With IoT back in the spotlight, it’s a good time to look at what impact blockchain has on the industry and what challenges there are to overcome. The spotlight was placed back on the Internet of Things (IoT )  recently when bosch, the multinational engineering and electronics company, tweeted on Nov. 12 about their Cross Domain Development Kit (XDK), a programmable sensor device and IoT prototyping platform, in partnership with IOTA. A number of definitions for IoT exist, of which Ernst and Young (EY) describes  it in the simplest terms: “The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the connection of devices — any devices — to the internet using embedded software and sensors to communicate, collect and exchange data with one another.” The industry has taken off significantly in recent years and estimations and predictions of its future growth and impact abound on the internet. Research and advisory company Gartner es
